About Our Farm

Welcome to Black Cap Farm! We are the LaMore family: Matt, Jen, and young Henry. We love living in northern Michigan and experiencing the wildlife it has to offer. It is the mission of our farm to help homeowner's return natural habitat to your backyard, no matter how large or small your space may be.

The name Black Cap Farm was inspired by the spunky & inquisitive forest bird who wears a black cap: the Black-Capped Chickadee. Our woodland farm is home to many of these chickadees - each family requiring 6,000-9,000 caterpillars to feed its' fledglings before they are ready to leave the nest. Where do they find so many caterpillars? On native plants, of course!

We encourage you to help support your regions' natural habitat and plant natives. We are located in Onekama, MI on the nationally recognized scenic M-22 and are open to the public. We welcome you to shop our greenhouse and potted inventory of native trees, shrubs, grasses, ferns and perennials.

We have designed our nursery layout in hopes to make native plants easy (and fun) to shop -whether you are an experienced native gardener or new to native plants upon your arrival. We have displays designated for trees, shrubs, ferns, shade perennials, sun-loving perennials, perennials for dry-sandy conditions, perennials for wet conditions, grasses and so on. Our signage includes images of blooms, planting guides, deer resistance and other tips for creating habitat. Please come & enjoy!

While you are here, make sure to take a few minutes to enjoy the fresh air and take in your surroundings. Our woodland farm is bursting with bird activity, croaking frogs, furry mammals, interesting forests and north country breezes.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
