About Our Farm

Welcome to Black Cap Farm! We love northern Michigan and experiencing the wildlife it has to offer. It is the mission of our farm to help homeowner's return natural habitat to their backyard no matter how large or small the space.

Our name is inspired by the spunky & inquisitive forest bird who wears that black cap: the Black-Capped Chickadee. Our woodland farm is home to many of these chickadees - each family requiring 6,000-9,000 caterpillars to feed its' fledglings before they are ready to leave the nest. Where do they find so many caterpillars? On native plants, of course!

We encourage you to help support the creation and preservation of habitat by planting natives. We are located in Onekama, MI on the nationally recognized scenic M-22 and are open to the public May through October. We welcome you to shop our greenhouse and container inventory of native trees, shrubs, grasses, ferns and perennials.

We make native plants easy to shop and examine, just like a typical garden center. We are open six days a week. We work with homeowners, environmental organizations, churches, government entities, and professional landscapers. It is important to us that people can come and spend time learning about the value of native plants and meeting new species for the first time. Our signage includes images of blooms, planting guides, deer resistance and other tips for creating habitat. Please come & enjoy!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
