About Our Farm

Welcome to Black Cap Farm! We are the LaMore family -Matt, Jen, little Henry and our dog, Ginger. We love living in northern Michigan and experiencing the wildlife it has to offer. It is the mission of our farm to bring a slice of this land's natural habitat back into your backyards, no matter how large or small your space may be.

The name Black Cap Farm was inspired by the spunky & inquisitive forest bird who wears a black cap, known to bird watchers as the Black-Capped Chickadee. Our woodland farm is home to many of these chickadees -each family requiring 6,000-9,000 caterpillars to feed its' fledglings before they are ready to leave the nest. Where do they find so many caterpillars? On native plants, of course!

We encourage you to help support our regions' natural habitat and plant natives. We can certainly help. We are located in Onekama, MI on the nationally recognized scenic M-22 and are open to the public. We welcome you to shop our greenhouse and potted inventory of native trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials.

Upon your arrival you will be greeted by Matt -owner, avid gardener & grower of our nursery stock. Matt is an expert in native plants with a passion for building easy to maintain backyard gardens. He specializes in plants favored by birds, bees and butterflies. He is also well versed in planting in a variety of soils, from shade to full sun, as well as rain and rock gardens. He will be happy to assist you in making selections for your planting needs.

While you are here you make sure to take a few minutes to enjoy the fresh air and take in your surroundings. Our woodland farm is bursting with bird activity, croaking frogs, furry mammals, thick forests and cool lake breezes -as we sit on a hillside overlooking beautiful Portage Lake.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
