About Our Farm
Welcome to Black Cap Farm! It is the mission of our farm to help homeowners create or restore natural habitat in their backyard no matter how large or small the space. Native plantings are the key to healthy habitat, but they are not always readily available or easily shopped. We offer in-person retail shopping on over 300 species May through October, six days per week. Please come browse our selection, learn more about each species, and consult on the habitat potential for your property!
Our name is inspired by the spunky & inquisitive forest bird who wears that black cap: the Black-Capped Chickadee. Our woodland farm is home to many of these chickadees - each family requiring over 6,000 caterpillars to feed their fledglings before they are ready to leave the nest. Where do they find so many caterpillars? On native plants, of course!

We encourage you to create habitat for birds, pollinators, and the rest of our ecosystem by planting natives. Located in Onekama, Michigan on the nationally recognized scenic M-22, we are open to the public May through October. Come shop our greenhouse and container inventory of native trees, shrubs, grasses, ferns and perennials. Find our complete species list on the website tab above!

We make native plants easy to shop and examine, just like a typical garden center. We work with homeowners, environmental organizations, churches, government entities, and professional landscapers. It is important to us that people can come and spend time learning about the value of native plants and meeting new species for the first time. Our signage includes images of blooms, planting guides, deer resistance and other tips for creating habitat. We are here to help!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
